Radio Nacional

Radio Nacional was founded in 1937 under the name “Radio Del Estado” (the Government’s Radio). Since then, it has been always under the control of the Executive Power. Currently, it belongs to Radio y Televisión S.E. and is managed by Argentina’s Federal System of Media and Public Content, led by Hernán Lombardi, who was directly appointed by President Mauricio Macri. As part of a nationwide, State-owned and radiobroadcasting system, Radio Nacional AM 870 belongs to a network comprised of 49 radio stations located across Argentina (each of them with single AM and FM frequencies), as well as another three music only radio stations in the city of Buenos Aires (Clásica, Folklórica and Rock).

Since Radio Nacional belongs to a State-owned broadcasting system, its editorial line and management are highly dependent on the National Executive Power. This has traditionally led to the governmentalization of the contents and management of Radio Nacional. As a result, it is very difficult for the radio station to build a sustained audience along time. As hosts and editors-in chief change quite often, the programming tends to vary with the changes in the country’s leadership. Nevertheless, the radio station features mostly a journalistic programming and does not share its hosts with other media belonging to Argentina’s National Government. It is one of the radio stations with the largest number of female hosts in the country.
