Grupo La Nacion
In 1909 the children of newspaper La Nacion’s founder, Bartolomé Mitre, created SA La Nacion, a company that purchased the newspaper founded in 1870 and that has represented conservative and landowning sectors for more than a century. Mitre’s descendants still control the firm: using the newspaper, which is the second most popular one in Argentina, as a bedrock, they have created a multimedia group that owns a digital TV channel (LN+) and a great share of the magazine market. They also built a closed stadium to host concerts and events in the city of Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires Arena) and partnered with Grupo Clarín to purchase the only newsprint manufacturer in Argentina (Papel Prensa) and Exponenciar, which organizes the main agribusiness trade fair in the country (Expoagro). Moreover, they have established loyalty card program Club La Nacion, which has allowed them to improve customer loyalty and grow their products by offering discounts and prizes to the newspapers’ subscribers, a model that has been implemented in other media as well. From 1998 to 2008, together with Grupo Clarín, La Nacion was also a shareholder of Compañía Inversora de Medios de Comunicación (Cimeco), through which it controlled newspapers La Voz del Interior from Córdoba and Los Andes from Mendoza, as well as news agency Diarios y Noticias (DYN), which they decided to close down in 2017.
In 2007 the group created Dridco, a company that was later purchased by Navent, Latin America’s online classified ads leader in websites such as Zona Jobs, Zona Prop and Bumeran. In that endeavor, La Nacion has partnered with Tiger Global Management, an invstment fund controlled by American mogul Chase Coleman III and Riverwood Capital.
In 2012 La Nacion purchased ImpreMedia, the largest Spanish-language newspaper and magazine publishing company in the United States.
