La Gaceta de Tucumán
La Gaceta de Tucumán, owned by the García Hamilton family, covers a group of media focused on news from Tucumán and northeastern Argentina. It is based on the company La Gaceta S.A. that runs newspaper La Gaceta de Tucumán, the most popular newspaper outside the city of Buenos Aires, its websites (La Gaceta and la Gaceta de Salta) and LG Play, which also produces audiovisual content. It also owns an online sales portal and other tourist and travel services.
Until the end of 2017, La Gaceta held stock in the agency Diarios y Noticias (DYN) together with newspapers Clarín, La Nacion and Río Negro. That year, they decided to close down the company and lay off its 100 workers.
Descendants of newspaper’s founder Alberto García Hamilton are controlling shareholders and members of its board: the President and CEO of the company is Daniel Dessein, great-grandson of García Hamilton and a frequent member of Argentina’s Association of Journalistic Entities (ADEPA), which he presided over, as well as the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).
During the last dictatorship and some months ahead of it, as part of Operativo Independencia, the newspaper and its shareholders had close ties with the military. Enrique García Hamilton, who was the newspaper’s Managing Director, became Secretary of Tourism of the province of Tucumán during the de facto government of Antonio Domingo Bussi, who was later convicted multiple times for crimes against humanity. Bussi himself would later be Garcia Hamilton’s daughter’s best man.
