Olmos Family

Olmos Family

Raúl Olmos grew up in Villa Marini, in the outskirts of Godoy Cruz, Mendoza. Today he owns an apartment in one of the most luxurious skyscrapers of Buenos Aires, Chateau Puerto Madero.

He is the oldest of the Olmos brothers, he studied accounting in Universidad de Cuyo. He left his job as an accountant to manage the subsidiary of Argentina’s Metallurgy Labor Union (UOM) in Mendoza.

After arguing with the owners of the company that provided health care services to UOM Mendoza’s workers, he founded his own health care company, Logimed, which was later hired by most of the UOM subsidiaries in the province of Buenos Aires.

He developed ties with Lorenzo Miguel, the then Secretary General of UOM. Miguel gave Olmos the task of improving the union’s poor financial situation. Using a fund administration, Olmos paid all the union’s insolvency debts and helped grow its equity. As a result, after Miguel’s death, Antonio Caló, who is the current union’s Secretary General, turned him into his right-hand man.

Due to the growth of Olmos’ health care companies, which provided services to almost all the UOM subsidiaries in Argentina, Grupo Basa UTE was founded. In 2005 Olmos partnered with his brother Alejandro to purchase newspaper Crónica and publishing house Editorial Sarmiento to his renowned founder, Héctor Ricardo García. Six years later, they purchased 51% of TV channel Crónica TV. In 2016 they bought the remaining stock. Most of Grupo Olmos’ companies are legally domiciled opposite to the UOM’s headquarters.

Alejandro Olmos is the youngest of the Olmos joined the business group under his brother Raúl’s wing, but currently he is Vice President of the holding, shareholder and Director of all the group's media. In addition, he represents his family’s interests in audiovisual production company Underground, which has created some of the most successful TV shows and films in Argentina in recent years.

A marketing graduate, Alejandro Olmos first worked in market research and then managed several hospitals owned by his brother. He created the brand Forjar Salud, the health scheme dependent on the Metallurgy Labor Union (UOM), and he was in charge of its communication and marketing strategy. He managed to double the health scheme’s membership. As part of that campaign, Forjar Salud sponsored soccer club Club Atlético Independiente from Avellaneda.

After newspaper Crónica was purchased in 2005, Alejandro started to work exclusively in the group’s media, digital platform and social network areas. He has also created several TV formats, produced stage plays and is a frequent political columnist and the holding’s leading writer.

He represents newspaper Crónica before business associations such as Argentina’s Federal Newspaper Publishers Association (AFERA) and Argentina’s Association of Journalistic Entities (ADEPA).
