Diario Perfil

In 1993 Jorge Fontevecchia founded magazine Caras in Brazil, which was a success in a country with a larger publishing market than Argentina’s.

Income from the neighboring country helped him embark on monumental projects, such as a newspaper that is edited twice a week.

The first version of the newspaper was launched in 1998 and lasted shortly: it was published for only three months before being abruptly closed. After 84 editions between May 9 and July 31,i it was an inflection point in the local print media market.

In 2005 Fontevecchia relaunched the newspaper, with a single edition on Sundays. Then he added a second edition on Saturdays.

Today one of the newspaper’s strong areas are the opinion columns written by some of the most renowned journalists of Argentina.

Fontevecchia had issues with several administrations due to the way official advertising was distributed. He filed charges against Carlos Menem’s first administration (1989–1995) as he considered that his media were discriminated. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ruled in his favor. He also filed charges against Cristina Fernández’s administration (2011–2015) for discrimination. This time, Argentina’s Supreme Court of Justice ruled in his favor.
