Diario Popular

Diario Popular was founded on May 1 1974 by journalists and businessmen Jorge Fascetto and David Kraiselburd from La Plata. It was taught as a paper for the masses with a focus on breaking news. Part of its market consolidation was closely related to the closure of newspaper Crónica, which had a similar audience, by Isabel Martínez de Perón’s administration.

The partnership between Fascetto and Kraiselburd (son) lasted until 2009, when they decided to split their stock. Fascetto stayed with Diario Popular, while Kraiselburd kept El Día (from La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires). In 2012 Fascetto purchased all the stock of news agency Agencia Noticias Argentina, the last media business that he shared with Kraiselburd.

Diario Popular is the third broadest circulation newspaper in Argentina according to the Circulation Verification Institute (IVC). However, its circulation has fallen considerably: in 2013 it was above 80,000 issues on average and now it is around 52,000 issues.

The newspaper is significantly cheaper than leading newspapers (Clarín, La Nacion, Página 12) and addresses the working classes, with a focus on breaking news.

David Kraiselburd and Jorge Fascetto

Kraiselburd was a renowned journalist and businessman from La Plata (capital of the province of Buenos Aires), who was Editor-In-Chief and owner of newspaper El Día. Kraiselburd was kidnapped and murdered by Peronist armed groups (Montoneros) weeks after the launching of Diario Popular. His son, Raúl, became then responsible for managing El Día and Diario Popular.
Both Kraiselburd and Fascetto had benefited from the “Revolución Libertadora” – a military uprising that overthrew Juan Domingo Perón in 1955 and remained in power until 1958. The military forces transferred newspaper El Día’s stock to Kraiselburd and Fascetto.
